Digital Design Case Study

During my time enrolled in Digital Design for my ITECH major I created projects on nearly everything from posters to logos to ads and videos. I really enjoyed my time picking up these new skills so let’s move along how I did the process.

  • Sustainable Theme

As directed by professor, Prof. Krikun, I, along with my classmates were to choose a sustainable theme to be a central focus throughout the course. That way our work was not only productive but was a big topic for source material.

To aid us our professor taught us the concept of design thinking how it is imperative to focus on the key things of not just what you want, but what you need in terms of gaining puplic attention.
From there I thought of what topic interested me the most. For there were tons of topics to choose from, no poverty, zero hunger, good health, quality education, etc. I myself settled on the topic of clean energy, and from there I narrowed it down to wind energy as it was a rare source of clean energy not commonly talked about. With that the next step was to research credible companies that contributed into providing wind based energy and the Vestas Wind Turbine Company was one of the first to catch my eye.

Vestas is the company that manufacture and design wind turbines across the globe. As a business they do astounding work constantly moving with the times by not simply sticking giant fans to the ground but designing improved models one more efficient than the last. But then as a community they work all parties involved, be it the people who hired them to their own employees and keep their motto of creating not just a safe environment for the planet but for the community as well.
That’s what hooked me in but the biggest thing about it is that I’m certain that with this project I can help enhance this goal of providing clean energy as well as a clean enviroment.

  • Logo Designing

Taking a look upon Vestas’ official logo, at face value is a simple title name with stylized font. It has a sort of motion to it with a mellow feel choosing blue text but I feel it misses out on feeling natural.

My take on all this was to make a blend of machine and nature and create a sort of hyperrealism but simple and to the point. Seeing how the business specializes in wind turbines, my idea was to photoshop a wind turbine as the base but instead of normal blades it’s replaced with leaves.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is turbine-fan-poster-logo-1.png

Here I simply removed the blades on the fans and using a single image of a leaf copied it and placed them accordingly in line to the turbine. Any gaps in the background I filled properly so the coloration was perfectly even.
Soon ill convert it into a silhouette and turn it into a more proper logo design.

  • Mock Logo Design

Below is the first logo prototype. After turning the concept photo into a 6-color silhouette I repainted the entire image to smooth out rough edges and alter the background to have two shades of blue that perfectly line up the horizon of the wind turbine.
Then using a text box I added the title Vestas in large bold font, nothing too abstract that it contrasts with the poster yet I chose the color choice of white text on a navy blue background so it blends with the background of the image yet is also a noticeable focal point along supplementing the vibrant green of the leaves and mellow blue of the sky.

  • Advertising

So I wanted to take a simple aproach in regards to this as I attempted to build upon my logo concept. I was a big fan with the concept of having leaves as the blade of the wind turbine. So I did more hand drawing to add natural detail, touched up rough edges, and lastly a quircky line to draw attention. Then in terms of how to go about said advertising I’ve organised proffesional social media accounts such as Twitter to use in the future.
